Uptick Board is the ad exchange for AI categories. Every category has a ticker and one top spot, and one company holds it at a time. We're forming the founding team now, one role at a time, from a waitlist.
186 AI categories listed · The Lock: Fri 16 Oct · 12:00 AM PT · The Open: Sat 17 Oct · 12:00 AM PT · The Uptick Report: every Monday
HOW WE WORK
West Coast, for now. We work remotely, and we haven't picked a city for the first office. That's up to you.
Written first. The Desk answers every email.
Agents at every seat. Everyone on the desk runs their own agents for the volume work: research, drafts, data, follow-ups. People own the judgement, the relationships and the sign-off.
The Morning Note. Everyone posts three lines by 8:00 AM PT: what moved, what you're watching, what you need. No stand-up meeting.
Flat by the close. Every email gets answered or acknowledged before you log off. Nothing sits overnight.
Day-ahead plans, real-time calls. We plan the week the night before, then decide on the information in front of us. Reviews come after, not meetings before.
Mark to market. We report what's true today, not what we hope it'll be. No rounding up.
Lead with the number. Every message opens with the answer. Context goes underneath.
Splits on paper first. Every commission split is written down before the deal, not after.
Bonus culture. We like paying bonuses. When the board has a good year, the desk does too.
The wall. Research and Coverage don't trade favours. It's why anyone believes our notes.
Agents draft, people sign. Nothing a holder reads or pays for goes out without a person's name on it.
Let the number say it. No exclamation marks in anything a holder or reader sees. When something big happens, the tape is excitement enough.
Floor badges. Founding hires pick their own four-letter ticker. It goes on your badge, your vest and your Slack handle, and it's yours for as long as the board runs. Badges are numbered in the order people join.
The Kit. We don't do swag. We make a short run of things worth owning: the vest, the tumbler, the speaker for the tailgate, the table for the cookout. The tape mark goes on quietly, and the vest has an amber lining you only see up close. Everyone on the desk gets the full Kit on day one. Some pieces stay with the desk and our holders; the rest will reach readers of The Uptick Report in time.
The House Call. We take milestones seriously, and we have a lot of fun with them. When a holder hits one, we build them something worth keeping and usually deliver it in person. What counts as a milestone moves with the board: the first $1,000 category will matter as much as the first $100,000 one.
The Bell. We're getting one. When a company takes #1 for the first time, it rings.
Settlement. Fridays after the close, the desk settles up: one round on the house, wherever you're working, in person or on camera.
On the road. A few times a year, we take the board to the shows where AI companies gather. If they can't come to us, the Pit goes to them.
Everyone works the Pit. At every show, the founding team runs the booth together. Everyone sells, and nobody's too senior to hand someone a card.
Founding roles
Research desk
Research covers the categories on the board. Holders can't pay for a note, see one early, or approve one.
ANLY
Research Analyst
Decide what counts as a category, then cover it. Define categories, write tickers, merge duplicates, and write the weekly category notes for The Uptick Report: who holds #1, what moved, who's watching, who's new.
You might be: a banking or research analyst, a market researcher, or someone with taxonomy instincts and strong opinions about naming.
Your agents: a category drafter, a duplicate finder and the weekly data pull.
Suggested pitch: A Category or A Coverage Note.
ASOC
Research Associate
Own a sector's coverage (agents, infrastructure, devtools). Run the data behind every note, from price history and the Wire to watchers, and set the standard the analysts write to.
You might be: a few years into research, consulting or strategy, and tired of writing decks no one reads.
Your agents: price-history and watcher pulls, chart drafts and a fact-checker for every note.
Suggested pitch: A Coverage Note.
Coverage desk
CPTR
Category Partner
This is the sales role, and there's no script. Find the AI companies that belong at #1 in your categories and walk founders and marketing leads through how sealed stakes and the top spot work.
You might be: an AE at an AI or devtools company, a newsletter sponsorship seller, or a founder who sold their own product.
Your agents: prospect research, first-draft outreach and follow-up tracking.
Suggested pitch: A Holder.
DCOV
Director, Category Coverage
Own a sector of the board end to end. Lead its Category Partners, hold the senior relationships, and know every company that could hold #1 before they know they want to.
You might be: a coverage banker, a media sales director, or a senior seller at an adtech company.
Your agents: a sector pipeline tracker and an account brief before every call.
Suggested pitch: A Holder or A Partner.
HLDR
Holder Relations Lead
You're the person a holder emails. Keep their category entry sharp, help them read their watchers and clicks, and make holding the top spot worth it month after month.
Your agents: weekly holder reports on watchers and clicks, and follow-up reminders.
Suggested pitch: A Holder or A Fix.
The Desk
WIRE
Editor, The Wire and The Uptick Report
Edit the Monday issue and write the desk notes on the Wire. Plain, unhurried, accurate.
Your agents: desk-note drafts from board events and a first draft of the Monday issue.
Suggested pitch: A Monday.
SCOT
Category Scout
Find categories before anyone has named them. Source AI companies, propose categories with a ticker, and introduce sponsors to the desk.
Your agents: launch tracking for new AI companies and products, and category drafts.
Suggested pitch: A Category or A Partner.

FLOR
Head of the Floor
The first sales leader, once Coverage needs one.
Your agents: pipeline and forecast reporting across Coverage.
LIVE
Live Board Producer
Build the Pit and run it. The Pit is our trade-show booth: a live board people can walk up to, with a tap-to-pay reader on every category, where a company can take #1 at the take price on the spot. You'll own the build, the shipping crates, the show calendar and the setup on the day, and you'll make a convention hall feel like an open-outcry floor.
You might be: an experiential or event producer, a booth builder, or someone who has run hardware demos at big tech shows.
Your agents: the show calendar and lead capture from the Pit.
Suggested pitch: A Show.
BNCH
The Bench
Not on the list? Pitch us the role you'd create.
Your agents: the ones your role needs. Tell us which in your pitch.
Suggested pitch: A Role.
HOW TO JOIN THE WAITLIST: PITCH US
Every application is a pitch. Pick one. Each role suggests the pitch that suits it, but any pitch works for any role. And every pitch comes with a city: we don't have an office yet, and when we open one, it goes where an applicant made the best case.
The City
The city for the first Uptick office, in 150 words or fewer: the AI companies there, the coffee, the train line, the reason. It doesn't have to be where you live.
A Category
An AI category that isn't on the board: name, four-letter ticker, the company that should hold #1, and why now.
A Coverage Note
One page on a category already on the board: who holds #1, what moved, what to watch. House rules: no ratings, no price targets.
A Holder
A company that belongs at #1 somewhere, and the first email you'd send its founder.
A Build
Something you built for the board with AI: a tool for holders, readers or the desk. Send the link.
Paste it into whatever you build with, or point your tool at uptickboard.com/brief.
An Agent
An agent you'd put on the desk: what it does, which role it works for, and a working demo. Send the link.
A Role
The job you'd create, with its ticker and your first 90 days.
A Show
The first event the Pit should go to, and how you'd run the booth.
A Monday
The subject line and opening paragraph of next Monday's Uptick Report.
A Fix
One thing on the board that's wrong or could be better, and your fix.
A Partner
A newsletter, community or event we should work with, and what each side gets.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
The Desk reads every pitch and replies to each one.
A call, if it's a fit for a role that's opening.
Superday. The final round is a paid day of real desk work: a coverage note, three holder conversations, or an hour in the Pit. No whiteboard puzzles.
Your badge.
Joining the waitlist isn't an offer of employment. Uptick Board is operated by Gusto Solutions, LLC. We consider every applicant without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status. Questions: desk@uptickboard.com
